Tiny Forest

Super tiny, super powerful...
and more than just trees

Join the movement

Why do we need Tiny Forest?

Tiny Forest brings the benefits of a forest right into the heart of our cities and urban spaces.

Earthwatch planted the UK’s first Tiny Forest in the UK in 2020. Since then the movement has grown to almost 150 forests, bringing together communities, public sector and businesses.

Tiny Forest is more than just trees. This amazing phenomenon reconnects people with nature, enhances wellbeing, helps mitigate the impacts of climate change and provides nature-rich habitat patches to support urban wildlife.

We’re seeking more visionary sponsors to join the Tiny Forest movement and help us expand our reach.

Introducing Tiny Forest

Δ A Tiny Forest is a dense fast-growing native woodland, based on an established forest management method developed in the 1970s by Dr Akira Miyawaki.

Δ We work to identify suitable sites in urban locations, where nature is most needed.

Δ We engage with local communities to plant, maintain and monitor their forest over time. The forests reconnect people with nature and raise awareness of climate change.

Δ  Environmental and social data is collected for every forest we plant, to help us assess the benefits they provide over time and between different forests.

Tiny Forests can support society and wellbeing

Tiny Forest can connect people with nature in their local area and support general wellbeing. They offer a place to relax, watch wildlife and an educational resource.

Each forest is expected to engage:

Δ Up to 100 volunteers on planting and monitoring days

Δ 4-6 volunteers as a Keeper Team to care the forest

Δ The wider community, visitors and school children as an inspiring place to enjoy nature

Super tiny, super powerful

Δ 600 trees planted densely in a tennis-court size plot, maximising benefits per m2 of land

Δ Planting method encourages accelerated forest development and uses no chemicals or fertilisers

Δ Low management and maintenance requirements after the first two years

Δ Rich biodiversity, capable of attracting over 500 animal and plant species within the first 3 years

Δ A nature-rich accessible green space and outdoor classroom for people to reconnect with nature

Δ Monitoring data gathered by citizen scientists to help understand how Tiny Forests develop, and quantify the climate benefits

Δ Links to business sustainability, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and environmental, social corporate governance (ESG)

Tiny Forest so far

The 2021/22 tree planting season is now complete and we have planted 149 forests across the UK! From Glasgow to Bristol, and many places in between.

Through the Tiny Forest programme, we have been able to work with over 20 incredible partners. Including Fever-Tree, MINI UK, OVO Foundation, Bloomberg, Blackrock and Vaillant, alongside local councils and schools.

What's next for Tiny Forest

We’ve achieved so much with Tiny Forest in just two years – but there are many more communities who can benefit. By 2030 we want to maximise the social and environmental impacts of Tiny Forest by:

  • Engaging 100,000 people with our Tiny Forest network
  • Planting a total of 500 Tiny Forests across the UK and Europe
  • Making sure that at least half of those locations are accessible to underserved communities
  • Understanding more about the environmental benefits of Tiny Forest through citizen science and new research

We are seeking visionary sponsors to help us achieve our ambitions.

Earthwatch is the only UK partner of IVN, the organisation leading the Tiny Forest movement.

Since planting our first forest in March 2020, we have seen first-hand the power of Tiny Forest to benefit people and nature.

We are seeking visionary sponsors to help us reach more communities. This is a sponsorship opportunity that’s more than just trees.
