Tiny Forest helps Hammersmith take top prize in TfL’s In Bloom awards

A little patch of woodland is making a big impression in Hammersmith. TfL’s Hammersmith Grove Service Control Centre has taken home the top prize in this year’s annual In Bloom competition, with its Earthwatch Tiny Forest playing a starring role.

The team won the Dennis Sanger Best in Show award after judges praised their efforts to involve local people in creating and caring for the Tiny Forest, while bringing more nature into the workplace. Planted with 600 native trees, a Tiny Forest packs a surprising amount of nature into an area roughly the size of a tennis court. Dense planting creates habitat for wildlife, while the forest can also help cool urban areas, improve soil and water management, and give people a chance to connect with nature on their doorstep.

Our Tiny Forests are designed as living laboratories, where local communities can become citizen scientists, monitoring trees, wildlife and the changing environment around them. This means each forest not only creates a greener space but also helps us understand how urban nature can benefit people and wildlife.

The Hammersmith win is a lovely reminder that nature can thrive in unexpected places (even alongside a busy control centre). Massive congratulations to our friends at TfL’s Hammersmith Grove Service Control Centre.
