CHEERS - Earthwatch Europe

CHEERS

Producing novel non-plant biomass feedstocks and bio-based products through upcycling and the cascading use of brewery side-streams.

Home » Projects » CHEERS

CHEERS aims to improve the value of under-used products and waste from the brewing industry for conversion into bio-products.

The Problem

The Food & Beverage industry in Europe produces 30 million tonnes of waste per year. Large amounts of by-products are also generated in this sector, which often end up as low-value market products (animal feed, compost, biogas) or landfilled.

Aims

The overall objective of CHEERS is to contribute to lower the environmental impact and increase resource efficiency of bio-based industries.

Approach

CHEERS will demonstrate that unused side-streams can be bio-transformed into competitive products. Bio-based industries can select from five novel biotechnological routes that generate five bioproducts for industrial applications: insect protein, disinfectant, microbial protein, ectoine (a natural compound found in several species of bacteria which protects cells against environmental stress) and caproic acid (used in making artificial flavourings).

Our role and how the project relates to our work

With our expertise in citizen science, Earthwatch facilitates the co-design of solutions for addressing and monitoring the environmental impacts of CHEERS methodologies. The aim of CHEERS – creating value chains which will achieve a minimum 45% reduction of the carbon footprint – is in line with our circular economy aspirations.
