Severn Trent and Tiny Forest: leaving a lasting legacy for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games

Severn Trent is working with partner Earthwatch Europe to create 72 Tiny Forests across the Midlands to deliver a lasting legacy for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

“Tiny Forests might be small, but their impact will be mighty. Not only will they help to deliver a lasting legacy for the Games but they will also create inspiring outdoor classrooms allowing children to learn first-hand about nature and the environment.” - Ricky Dallow, Severn Trent's Forest Delivery Manager

Severn Trent is the UK’s second biggest water company, serving 4.1m homes and business customers in and around the Midlands. As a company that takes care of one of life’s essentials, Severn Trent is committed to making a positive impact on the communities and the environment where people live and work.

Leaving a lasting legacy for people and planet

As the official Nature & Carbon Neutral Supporter for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Severn Trent has created 72 Tiny Forests across the region, one for each of the nations and territories competing in the Games. The sites will help boost access to green space in urban areas, supporting environmental education and increasing regional resilience against environmental issues such as flooding, heat stress and nature loss.

Through its Tiny Forest partnership with Earthwatch Europe, Severn Trent is delivering a series of initiatives that help offset the carbon generated by the Commonwealth Games, with the aim of leaving a positive social and environmental legacy of sustainability across the Midlands.  In addition, these amazing projects will build on its existing Great Big Nature Boost commitments of planting 1.3 million new trees, enhancing 5,000 hectares of biodiversity and improving 2100km of rivers in the region.

The trees planted will also form part of The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC), a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the UK to "Plant a Tree for the Jubilee".

Tiny Forest: a local place for learning and connection

Tiny Forest offers a unique opportunity to allow people to learn first-hand about nature and the environment. Severn Trent invited schools and community groups to express their interest in hosting one of the 72 Tiny Forest sites created across the Midlands.

The forests will play an important role in supporting environmental education across the Midlands. As part of this, citizen scientists, from the local community, will be invited to help collect data and assess the benefits of the Tiny Forest in their area, including carbon absorption, flood management and the impact on biodiversity.

Earthwatch is providing training and resources for schools to help them utilise their Tiny Forest as an inspiring outdoor classroom, with hands-on workshops allowing children to learn first-hand about nature and the environment.
