Aisha Nankanja

Biography
Aisha joined Earthwatch in 2024. She is a senior graduate student of Sociology at Makerere University, currently concluding her master’s thesis titled “Water equity and sustainable water supply management. A case study of subsidised water tariffs for refugees in Kiryandogo settlement, Uganda”. Additionally, in 2020, she co-founded a non-profit community-based organisation, Rural Water Initiative for Climate Action, that aims to work collaboratively with communities to provide equitable access to safe water, empower women as decision makers in the WASH sector, and build resilience in integrated water resource management through ecosystem conservation using a citizen-science approach. She now works on the Horizon Europe research project ProBleu, promoting ocean and water literacy in school communities.

Aisha is part of the team developing the ProBleu funding calls and teaching resources. The aim is to grow the Network of European Blue Schools and bring ocean and water literacy into the classroom across the EU and associated countries.
Activities
Aisha has served on the Strategic and Advisory Committee of the World Water Quality Alliance (WWQA) since 2022. WWQA focuses on generating information and data that informs scientific assessments of water quality, translating this data into actions that restore, enhance, and protect water quality and is a member of the Lake Victoria Basin Advisory Group.
