Second planting season brings total to 149 Tiny Forests across the UK

The Tiny Forest planting season, from October 2021 to March 2022, has now finished. This has been our best planting season yet; with the support of our amazing partners and landowners, we have now planted 149 Tiny Forests bringing our goal of 150 forests across the UK by 2023 within tantalisingly close reach!

New partnerships take root

Tiny Forests can be a great way for organisations to meet their sustainability and CSR goals by supporting nature and leaving a positive impact on the communities in which they operate.

This year, Siemens Mobility sponsored their first Tiny Forest in Chippenham where they have been a major employer for 120 years. Sustainability is high on the company’s agenda and they are committed to making a visible difference to communities in which they work.

The Guinness Partnership became the first housing association in the country to create a Tiny Forest on their land; enhancing the communities where they provide homes.

For Bellway Homes, sponsoring a Tiny Forest in Ponteland, Newcastle upon Tyne, made a perfect fit for their biodiversity commitment as part of their wider sustainability strategy; aiming to create long term sustainable communities in which their customers want to live.

West Moor Park, Doncaster, also became home to a Tiny Forest thanks to our new partner Gazeley Logistics.

A special thanks also goes to Shamita Ray for supporting a Tiny Forest in Normand Park in London and Martin Blain who sponsored forests in Barnet and Dagenham Green on behalf of the WFH Foundation with the support for research from Isky Gordon.

Existing partnerships blossom

Severn Trent has given this year’s planting season a fantastic boost by planting 74 Tiny Forests in urban areas across the West Midlands. 72 of Severn Trent’s Forests were planted to celebrate the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games; these Forests, an amazing 44,400 trees, were planted for the 72 Commonwealth Territories, each forest was named after their national bird, flower or tree. Together these forests will have a big impact:

  • Creating 430 biodiversity monitoring points
  • Creating seating for over 650 people across the Tiny Forests
  • Over 2000 members of the public have been involved in planting days
  • 7,200 trees were tagged for future monitoring
  • Enough mulch was laid to fill 7 double decker buses
  • Tiny Forests were planted for 32 schools

Hannah Davidson, Tiny Forest?Programme?Manager at Earthwatch Europe, said “We were delighted to work with Severn Trent to connect with so many schools and communities across the West Midlands with nature.”??

In February, BlackRock helped to plant a Tiny Forest at Hobbayne Primary School in London, and in collaboration with Peabody, planted their fourth forest in Southmere Park in London.

In March, our partnership with Fever-Tree was shortlisted for an edie sustainability leaders award in the category ‘Nature and Biodiversity Project of the Year’ for planting London’s first Tiny Forest

The OVO Foundation has now supported 12 Tiny Forests over two planting seasons. In March a Tiny Forest at the William Torbitt Primary School was planted, and another in Blackpool in collaboration with the Mathers Family Trust, which the children from Mereside Primary Academy helped to plant. The Tiny Forest in Blackpool is part of Blackpool Council’s new strategy to green up Blackpool which means all new development must include more trees.

Vaillant and Nationwide Building Society teamed up this season to help plant a Tiny Forest in Swindon at Buckhurst Field. Have a look at this video of the planting day to find out what inspired our partners and the local community to get involved.

In May, our partnership with MINI was a finalist at Business Charity Award in the Charity Partnership – Automotive & Transport category. MINI also supported another two forests this year, one in Barnet and one at The Grove Primary School in Cambridge in collaboration with Cambridge County Council. MINI has now sponsored an amazing 12 Tiny Forests – with more to come next planting season!

In addition to the Tiny Forest at The Grove Primary School, Cambridge County Council also helped to plant a forest at Fawcett Primary School. Cambridge City Council supported another Tiny Forest at Five Trees in Cambridge.

After planting season comes monitoring season

We engage with local communities to plant, maintain and monitor their forest over time. The forests reconnect people with nature and raise awareness of climate change. Environmental and social data is collected for every forest we plant, to help us assess the benefits they provide over time and between different forests.

We got to experience the first taste of this in Glasgow’s Govan area on the 18th of May, when the same children from local schools who planted the forest returned to engage in monitoring activities with our partners Glasgow Science Centre and our Tiny Forest delivery team. Funded by Bloomberg, this powerful partnership celebrates community connections and the return to nature, which was evident in children’s feedback, as they were delighted to watch their trees grow and found their learning inspiring.

Fund the future: become a Tiny Forest sponsor

Since planting our first forest in March 2020, we have seen first-hand the power of Tiny Forest to benefit people and nature. Land has already been secured for our 2022-2023 planting season but we are seeking visionary sponsors to help us plant the trees, ensure ongoing monitoring, and reach more communities. This is a sponsorship opportunity that’s more than just trees – get in touch with us to find out more and join the Tiny Forest movement!
