Tyre particulate freshwater pollution pilot study

Earthwatch Europe partnered with Emissions Analytics on a pilot study in the Evenlode and Windrush river catchments to monitor freshwater pollution from tyre particulates. The analysis revealed alarming levels of tyre-derived pollutants in the Evenlode and Windrush rivers, key tributaries of the River Thames. The investigation highlights the hidden threat of tyre wear particles to freshwater ecosystems.

Key findings from the report include:

  • Chemicals linked to tyre wear, such as antioxidants and stabilizers, were present in all of the water samples collected.
  • Concentrations of certain compounds, like 2,4-Di-tert-butylphenol, exceeded safe thresholds for aquatic life, raising concerns about long-term bioaccumulation and toxicity.
  • Runoff from roads enters rivers untreated, threatening the health of local freshwater systems.
