Walking for nature
Just a month after we had cheered for our charity runners at the TCS London Marathon 2023, the Earthwatch Fundraising & Communications Team was delighted to hear about the ambitious plans of a young Fundraising Hero called Dylan. The 10-year-old nature-lover and his father decided to walk the 52-mile hike called “The Herriot Way” in the Yorkshire Dales to raise money in support of our environmental work.
The Herriot Way is a circular walk famous for its stunning scenery, including green rolling valleys and heather-clad moorland.
As his mother told us, Dylan and his father had wanted to do a through-hike together for a while, and “the Herriot Way in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales looked like the perfect first choice!”
Dylan chose to support Earthwatch, because it sounded like a good charity to help keep our precious natural resources safe and protected. “Dylan loves being out in nature with all the animals, plants, bugs, everything (!), and wanted to support a charity that loves nature as much as he does!”
Dylan has raised over ?500 which is more than double what he thought he would raise. “He is very proud of what he has achieved and glad that he’ll be able to give to Earthwatch to help keep our beautiful nature thriving for generations to come.”

How Dylan’s donation will make a difference
The generous donation raised by Dylan and his father will enable us to support our environmental programmes, including Naturehood and Tiny Forest, that bring nature to urban communities in need.
Through Naturehood we work with communities to create wildflower meadows and verges, new ponds and a variety of safe spaces for nature like hedgehog highways. Recently, Naturehood volunteers have been protecting migrating frogs by helping them to cross the roads safely.
Tiny Forests are dense fast-growing woodlands made up of 600 trees in a tennis court sized space. The forests are rich in biodiversity, capable of attracting over 500 animal and plant species within the first three years. Thanks to wonderful fundraisers like Dylan, we have planted over 200 of these forests so far. By 2030, we hope to have planted over 500 forests.
