London Marathon 2025: Support Katie!
10th March 2025
Much of Earthwatch Europe’s work wouldn’t have the impact it does without public support, including the wonderful fundraisers who have run (or walked) the London Marathon for us. Hear from our runner, Katie, why she decided to take on this epic challenge.
Why did you decide to run the London Marathon? Have you taken on similar fundraising challenges before?
I’m a regular runner and have taken on the London Marathon on a number of occasions, but always for myself and my running club. This year I decided I wanted to run for a charity and set out to find one that aligned closely with my own personal interests.
What made you choose Earthwatch Europe as your charity to support?
Nature is my passion. From filling my little paved-over terrace front garden with pollinator-friendly plants, container ponds and bird feeders to installing a water butt, hot composter and wormery… I am proof that even in a small area on a main road you can do your bit for the planet! When I’m not outside tending to my mini wildlife haven or pursuing my lifelong hobby of birdwatching, I’m working hard for a local, ethical organic vegbox scheme. I also enjoy furthering my wildlife knowledge through natural history study courses.
I believe that nature is fundamental – to our health, our wellbeing, to our very survival. And yet so many people are disconnected from this precious, vital, beautiful planet that we all share. And this disconnection leads to ecological crisis.
So what better charity to support than Earthwatch Europe, an amazing organisation that connects people with nature, motivates them to protect the environment and provides them with the knowledge and tools to make change happen.
I’m really looking forward to lacing up my trainers and running through the glorious South Pennines to raise awareness of this amazing charity!

How is the marathon training going? What do you like best / least about it?
So far so good, despite the best efforts of the Yorkshire weather throwing floods, deep snow and gale force winds at me! The highlights to this point have been completing an eight-mile fell race in a blizzard, my first 20-mile training run, and the opportunity to explore the North Norfolk coastal path whilst on holiday recently.
What I like best about training is all the wonderful wildlife I see when out in the countryside! Long runs are just long distance nature rambles.
What I like least so far is running on snow and ice when the temperature is several degrees below freezing! Hopefully there’s no more of that to come…
How can people support you with your fundraising challenge?
I encourage support through donations on my Enthuse fundraising page. This is how the funds will make a difference:
- £15 could buy vegetable plants for an urban school as part of Green Earth Schools.
- £25 could buy freshwater quality testing kits for our FreshWaterWatch volunteers.
- £50 could support our community monitoring events at our Tiny Forests.
