Earthwatch at 50: Karen Schumacher’s story

In 1997, Karen Schumacher spent two weeks in Argentina’s rainforest after being awarded a Millennium Teacher Fellowship. During the expedition, Karen and her team members were tasked with tracking the health of the Howler Monkeys’ population, a task that kept them busy from dawn to dusk.

“On the morning shift we had to get up before dawn, cross the river by canoe and wait for monkeys to wake up. Then came the technical work – catching their pee when they woke!”

In the years that followed, Karen shared her experiences in the Argentine jungle in local schools leading her to become affectionately known as ‘the Monkey Woman’.
