Earthwatch at 50: Francis Vorhies’ story

Francis is a Conservation Economist whose work addresses the nexus between business, economic development, and conservation – an area that is increasingly described as the wildlife economy. Francis currently divides his time between a number of roles including Research Visitor at the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit at the University of Oxford, Academic Director of the School of Wildlife Conservation at the African Leadership University in Rwanda, and Director of the African Wildlife Economy Institute at Stellenbosch University in South Africa.

Francis was CEO of Earthwatch Europe between 2003-2004 and joined the organisation as it was delivering HSBC’s Investing In Nature Programme.

“I was attracted to Earthwatch because of its path-breaking expeditions enabling private individuals, and company employees to engage in tangible conservation projects. Though organising impactful field research opportunities – both abroad and at home – the Earthwatch approach empowers and motivates all of us to do our bit for conservation.”
