Investigating urban run-off in the River Cherwell Report

We teamed up with Thames21, Friends of the River Thames and local community members to investigate whether pollutants have entered the River Cherwell, after fly-tipped waste approximately 150m long and 6m high was discovered on a field between the River Cherwell and the A34 near Kidlington.

Our data shows that the River Cherwell is already polluted before it reaches the landfill. Road runoff is likely to be a main source of pollution, resulting in high levels of metals and toxic chemicals. Although being a possible source of microplastics and microbial matter pollution, the landfill site is currently unlikely to be a significant source of metal and chemical pollution in the River Cherwell.
