SDGs

The United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development, more commonly known as the SDGs, were launched in September 2015.

They call for worldwide action by governments, businesses and individuals to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for everyone by 2030.

Our strong scientific background and extensive experience of working in partnership with businesses has helped us develop programmes that reach across many of the SDGs.

How we contribute to the SDGs

Clean water and sanitation

Access to water and sanitation are basic human rights and are critical challenges for sustainable development. Our FreshWater Watch programme focusses on freshwater research and education. Corporate employees and individuals collect water quality data from rivers, lakes and ponds, providing important information for scientists.

Sustainable cities and communities

In recent decades, the world has experienced unprecedented urban growth, with four billion people now living in cities. The HSBC Sustainability Training Programme will focus on regional scientific research projects, investigating the relationship between climate change, urban green infrastructure and urbanisation.

Life below water

Oceans are under threat from pollution, over-exploitation and climate change. We’re working with Mitsubishi Corporation in the Seychelles to explore how coral reefs respond to a changing climate, and which management strategies can build coral and community resistance.
