Save our soils - Earthwatch Europe

Save our soils

We are pleased to announce the winners of our soil art competition in celebration of World Soils Day and the launch of the UKSoils online soils hub!

In first place is 5-year-old Max Cameron, who thought about the different animals that live in soil and what soil is made from. Congratulations, Max – enjoy your prizes!

We also have two highly commended entries that will also be featured on the new UKSoils online hub: Daniel Puicar’s ‘Healthy Soil Math Formula’ and Iain Naismith’s ‘Worm Art Installation’ – created by an actual worm!

Celebrate World Soils Day by visiting the new UKSoils online hub: a place to share information, generate new knowledge and increase awareness and action to improve soil health across the UK. It’s a place for farmers, foresters, landscape managers, urban planners, community gardeners, citizen scientists, parents and schools, policy makers and academics! It brings together resources to:

  • Inspire
It shows the best independent, accurate and inspiring available information on soils including films, games and apps so everyone can engage with soils.
  • Educate
The platform enables access to: publicly available soil data; family/primary school-based activities; accredited Continuous Professional Development (CPD) organisations and support materials for land managers and farmers.
  • Demonstrate
You can find locations and activities of existing ‘Lighthouses’ and ‘Living Laboratories’ within the UK to encourage collaborative working within and between communities and maintain a link into potential EU future funding.
  • Share
Dive into a community forum to share experiences of best practice and develop new innovative practices including a series of online events targeted to different topics.

This initiative aims to establish soil alongside air, biodiversity and water as one of the four critical environmental indicators and kickstart behaviour change that improves soil health. We all play a vital part in the health of our soils, by driving policy change through awareness and campaigning and doing our bit to directly benefit soil health. Visit the UKSoils hub to start making a difference for soil health!
