London Marathon – run for nature, run for Earthwatch!

Much of Earthwatch’s work wouldn’t have the impact it does without public support, including the wonderful fundraisers who have run the London Marathon for us. Some of them have shared with us why they think Earthwatch Europe is a charity worth running for.

About the London Marathon

"The London Marathon is the largest annual fundraising event on the planet. Since it began in 1981, participants have raised more than £1 billion for good causes." – London Marathon Events

In previous years, the London Marathon has taken place in the first week of October. Since the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, there have been two options to take part in this epic event:

  • As part of the live event in London (the traditional event), runners need to complete the marathon (26.2 miles) within an 8-hour time limit.
  • The virtual event gives competitors 24 hours to complete the 26.2 miles, anywhere in the UK – running or walking – and using an app to track their progress. This means that not just athletes and experienced runners can take on the London Marathon!

Why run for Earthwatch Europe?

Earthwatch Europe is an environmental charity with science at its heart. Since our founding in 1971, we have worked with governments, policymakers, businesses, communities, educators and scientists to raise environmental awareness, gather data and develop nature-based solutions. We empower everybody to take achievable actions for the good of our planet.

From funding research and helping us to advance citizen science to planting more Tiny Forests, supporting wildlife and educating children as well as businesses on the importance of nature – every donation will make a real difference:

  • £10 could buy 10 trees to be planted in a Tiny Forest.
  • £30 could put homes for wildlife such as hedgehogs, frogs and birds in our communities.
  • £50 could buy equipment for schoolchildren so that we can inspire our scientists of the future.

Thoughts and experiences from Earthwatch’s previous London Marathon runners

We’ve asked runners from previous London Marathon events why they chose to run for us and what made it such an unforgettable experience:

"It seems obvious to raise money for Earthwatch Europe. Whether we’re looking at worms, coasts or fresh water; the commitment of our citizen scientists never fails to impress – how could you not be motivated by that?" – Malcolm Bradbrook, London Marathon in-person runner (2016)

"I can feel the warm support and hear the cheer of all the spectators lining the streets, an amazing atmosphere. Music and parties are everywhere, ranging from elegant jazz bands to raw, thumping boom boxes (...). Coming off the Tower Bridge, just past the 20km mark, I can see runners heading West, whereas I’m directed to head East to complete a full round of Canary Wharf. My motivation wanes and I decide to start walking at the 27km mark. Now I can really take in the cheers and enjoy London at its very best. My finishing time is not so important, it will be a personal best anyway because it is my first marathon ever!" – Albertus Zwiers, London Marathon in-person runner (2019, 2021 & 2022)

"Whether you choose to run or walk (like me), the Virtual London Marathon is a great day to be part of. Running for Earthwatch, you are raising money for a fantastic organisation, too. I met lots of other people on my chosen route - all taking part in the event, and couldn't wait to sign up for this year!" – Claire Doe, London Marathon virtual runner (2021 & 2022)
