Earthwatch at 50: Brian Sinclair's story

As an outdoors enthusiast, and having recently taken voluntary redundancy from work, Brian Sinclair was delighted to be awarded an Earthwatch Millennium Fellowship in 2002. The fellowship enabled Brian to take his first ever long haul flight to Brazil where he spent two weeks monitoring freshwater turtles in the Amazon.

After returning, Brian gave talks about his experiences for a number of years to engage people with environmental issues. As a councillor in Wivenhoe, he also successfully persuaded the local council to make the community’s green spaces more wildlife friendly, leaving areas unmanaged and establishing a wildlife pond.

“Although it was a scientific research project, we volunteers could provide lots of practical hands-on help monitoring the hatching of Amazonian turtles. Something that would be difficult for researchers to do alone.  In just one nest there were 124 baby turtles!”
