Nurturing nature: why weve joined Business for Natures global coalition to reverse nature loss
22nd July 2020
The coalitions Call to Action, launched at a global leadership event last month, will demonstrate to policy makers that there is a powerful collective business voice calling for more ambitious nature policies.
Nature is at the heart of everything we do. Healthy societies, resilient economies and thriving businesses all rely on it, but these natural resources and ecosystems are under huge strain. We believe protecting nature is essential for all our futures and that businesses have a key role to play in reversing nature loss. Earthwatch has a long history of engaging with businesses to help them understand their environmental impacts, build resilience and demonstrate leadership in sustainability. We work with companies to put an emphasis on nature and improve their practices to protect it within their industries. Our research areas give tangible ways for business to explore the positive impact they can have.
For example, our work in Sustainable Agriculture demonstrates a business case for improving the sustainability of supply chains, specifically looking at soil healthy and protecting biodiversity. Research and initiatives from our Climate-Proof Cities programme, such as Tiny Forests, is identifying how nature-based solutions can create urban areas resilient to climate change. And our global FreshWater Watch programme has direct links to the water industrys efforts to protect fresh water systems, on which we all rely.
Business for Natures Call to Action comes at a significant time for society. As political leaders plan for our post-COVID recovery, they cannot afford to overlook the role of nature as the beating heart of a green recovery and the foundations needed to truly build back a better world. We believe that nature is everyones business.
