Tiny Forest Biodiversity Week 2023 – the results are in!

From 20 – 28 May 2023, we invited communities across the UK to visit their local Tiny Forest and take part in our annual Biodiversity Week. We are pleased to share the results and would like to thank everyone who got involved this year.

What is the Tiny Forest Biodiversity Week?

Tiny Forest is a dense fast-growing native woodland, based on an established forest management method developed in the 1970s by Dr Akira Miyawaki. Each forest is capable of attracting over 500 animal and plant species within the first three years.

Our annual Tiny Forest Biodiversity Week is a simple citizen science study to assess the wildlife at our network of more than 200 Tiny Forests. Communities across the UK spend time in nature completing short surveys about what they see. By taking part in citizen science, people of all ages and backgrounds can become a vital part of our environmental research. We use science to better understand the environmental challenges we face, and to find solutions to these issues. The data from our Biodiversity Week will allow us to better understand how a Tiny Forest can support wildlife in urban areas.

What are this year’s results?

A total of 120 biodiversity surveys were completed across 16 Tiny Forests as part of Biodiversity Week 2023. Participants recorded 275 pollinators, including butterflies and moths as well as 1687 other ground-dwelling insects such as ants, worms, snails, spiders and beetles.

We ran a ‘Research wrap up’ to expand upon your data collection. Our leading research scientists, Dr. Claire Narraway and Dr. Sophie Cowling, take this opportunity to share initial results, highlight the importance of your data collection to help us determine the impact Tiny Forests are having on local biodiversity. Watch the Biodiversity Week wrap-up video below.

Next up: join us for our Tiny Forest Carbon Storage Week!

From 16 – 24 September 2023, we will run our annual Carbon Storage Week – another great opportunity to explore the benefits of our Tiny Forests and become a citizen scientist for a day! Keep an eye on our website and social media channels for more information.
