Earthwatch at 50: Richard and Nina Webb’s story

Inspired by an Earthwatch expedition his parents had joined in 1991, Richard and his wife, Nina were keen to join Earthwatch’s ‘Temple Troops’ expedition to Sri Lanka in 1997.

“Our plan was to go on holiday and do something meaningful,” explained Richard. “We hadn’t quite bargained for getting up at 5am to track macaques but it was definitely worth it!”

The trip heightened Richard’s affection for the natural world. “I love the Earthwatch expedition model.” he said. “An opportunity to visit somewhere different, get immersed in local culture, while knowing you are also helping to fund and contribute to valuable research.”

Richard now runs his own company and ensures some of the profits are returned to conservation through his foundation.

“Earthwatch heightened my affection for the natural world, I ensure our company donates to environmental projects. This gets a huge buy-in from our staff and makes the company more than a place where you just go to work.”
