Earthwatch at 50: Emma Fonseca’s story
After growing up on an organic farm, HSBC Business Manager Emma Fonseca rebelled against her alternative upbringing when she joined the army. She later joined HSBC, and when she took on the running of a sustainability forum, her childhood interests in the environment found a way to fit with her career.
In 2019, Emma attended the Earthwatch and HSBC Sustainability Leadership Programme (SLP). The specialist training empowered her to introduce a number of changes that made a big impact. Sustainability is quite an overwhelming subject but SLP broke it down and made it achievable. It was great to have the time out of the office in nature.
Emma is focused on engaging her wider team in the big issues of climate change and sustainability, and shes introduced a series of film nights, sustainable finance lunchtime talks to embed the message. When her department moved to a new building, she also seized the opportunity to reduce waste, banning single-use plastic cups and bottles and giving all staff a reusable cup and bottle instead.
Im proud to work for a global bank that is so committed to making positive environmental changes.
