Earthwatch at 50: Amanda Bergin’s story

When Amanda moved away from her country roots to work for an insurance company in the City, she became increasingly aware of environmental change and concerned about London’s air pollution.

Amanda jumped at the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Climate Change by taking part in the Earthwatch expedition ‘Climate Change at the Arctic’s Edge’ in 2001.

Along with another Royal Sun Alliance colleague, selected from 50,000 staff, Amanda journeyed to an air base in Manitoba, Canada where she helped researchers collect critical data to understand the impacts of global-warming on frozen Arctic ecosystems.

“The Earthwatch expedition was truly life changing for me” said Amanda.

“Twenty years later, I still talk about the time that I lived alongside polar bears and was no longer at the top of the food chain. Seeing the impacts of climate change up close had a powerful influence on my lifestyle too, inspiring me to recycle and to encourage sustainable behaviours in my three teenage children.”
